Since 2018 I have had the honor, pleasure, privilege of being a 'behind the scenes' trusted partner in the programming, design and development of a new facility for The River Food Pantry.Some of you are much more aware than others of my passion and dedication towards The River getting the space it truly needs and frankly deserves.This process began with a small exercise in trying to reconfigure existing space back in 2018 to more efficiently serve clients and increase service offerings.Through a handful of iterations and some physical demolition efforts with Jon Clark (hah!), we were able to free up a great deal of space, reorganize operational flow and ultimately maximize utilization of the space.This was beneficial in that immediate moment, but long-term we knew they needed more space. Then, 2020 happened. The past four years have been a whirlwind of change.Operations at the River went through multiple 180-degree pivots, amidst what felt like an overnight doubling and tripling of clients in need.The pandemic created new operational procedures upon which The River needed to rearrange its internal space for maximizing a heightened effort in a time of crisis.As the organization ramped up services in this new daily context, behind the scenes a continued effort was happening to rethink and reorganize programmatic needs for the new facility.It was becoming increasingly evident that The River needed space NOW and needed to rethink The River of the past and The River of the future.Rhonda Adams and her team were always up to the challenge, day in and day out.This new facility will transform The River.The building provides more than ‘just’ a food pantry, but a collection of community offerings, individualized service opportunities and more.The mission has always gone above and beyond ‘a fully nourished community.’Now, it will be able to physically demonstrate that.I am ecstatic to see this organization get the facility it deserves.This journey navigated reconfiguration of existing spatial constraints while planning for daily-changing, future spatial needs.It withstood numerous conversations about local codes and ordinances attempting to challenge its form, location and defining its use. And while that failed to hinder its progress, not even a world pandemic could dent the armor of the mission. The River never stopped flowing.To the River Food Pantry, Rhonda Adams, Helen Osborn-Senatus, MSW and Monica Wahlberg - Thank you for entrusting us to help bring this vision to life! To Dave Beck-Engel thank you for being a dedicated sounding board, collaborator and coordinator in the process and for understanding (dealing with?) my overly-passionate approach to...everything. And to my team here at Ramaker | Architecture + Engineering, thank you for everything you've done to help The River visualize their next chapter. Just reflecting on last weeks Hunter Hotel Investment Conference and the beautiful Atlanta weather, the bustling activity of the Exhibit Hall Floor, the Ramaker | Architecture + Engineering team in their bright Orange Coats met with head turns, smiles, laughter and then our flight back to beautiful Wisconsin and its welcoming Spring (snow) showers…which accumulate…and require shoveling…but include snowman construction with the kids…Last week was full of excitement.Thank you to the #Hunter team for a great conference once again.We are really intrigued to see how this year plays out in the #Hospitality Industry!In the interim, I couldn’t pass up on one last chance to highlight the Orange.But not just any Orange; #BobHunterApproved Orange 😊 Thank you Bob Hunter for establishing this great conference that has gone 35 years strong – and counting!And even more so for encouraging standing out and embracing color!
