Applications received after the priority deadline will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Undergraduate Admission Requirements

If you are a beginning freshman, a transfer from another university, or a visiting or exchange student, here is what we need to review your application. Nursing applicants: admission to the Department of Nursing involves a separate application. Please contact us for further details.

1: Complete an Application

Your first step to apply is to complete the Truman Application online. Once you have submitted your application, use the Student Portal to check on the status of your application or upload additional materials. Not ready to apply, but want to connect with our admissions team or ask a question? Contact us here.

2: Submit English Proficiency Scores or Apply Conditionally

  • Option One: Submit Official English Proficiency Scores: Truman requires a minimum overall score of:
    • 79 for TOEFL (iBT)
    • 6.0 for IELTS
    • 110 for Duolingo
    • OR another equivalent measure.

Official scores must be sent by your testing agency directly to Truman State University. You may also satisfy this requirement by transferring English Composition credits from a U.S. university. Waivers are available for U.S. citizens or students who have completed the majority of their secondary schooling from one of the countries on our approved list. Get more details here.

  • Option Two: Apply as a Conditional Student: If you cannot provide proof of English proficiency, you may apply as a conditional student in your application. As a conditional student, you will be required to complete a Level 9 certificate in English language at The Language Company on the Truman Campus or an approved alternative ESL program in the United States before being fully admitted to Truman State. Please note: Visiting and exchange students are not allowed to apply as conditional students.

3: Submit Official Transcripts

Truman must receive an official or certified copy of your transcripts from each school you have previously attended. This includes high schools, secondary schools, and universities. Official or certified copies of these transcripts should be sent directly to Truman’s International Office by your school. Transcripts can be delivered through a transcript service or mailed by your school to the following address:

Center for International Students
Truman State University
Baldwin Hall 104
100 East Normal Avenue
Kirksville, Missouri 63501
USA

4: Complete the Certificate of Financial Support

To issue immigration documents, Truman must verify your ability to pay for your education at Truman. All non-U.S. citizens are required to complete and submit a Certificate of Financial Support. Instructions for completing this document are found in the document itself. Certificates of Financial Support should be uploaded through the Student Portal.

5: Submit Supporting Bank Documents

For all non-U.S. citizens, the Certificate of Financial Support must be verified with bank documents. These bank documents should be uploaded through the Student Portal and should include the following:

  • A letter or statement issued by the financial sponsor’s bank dated within the last 6 months that shows evidence of enough funds to meet at least one year of expenses for your proposed program of study (Visiting or Exchange students attending for one semester only need to demonstrate one semester of funds). The required balances on these bank documents can be found here. If you submit these documents after receiving a scholarship offer, the scholarship amount may be subtracted from the required amounts
  • The bank letter or statement must show that the account is held in your sponsor’s name (as listed on the Certificate of Financial Support), list the current balance of the account and currency, and state the date when the account was opened

6: Submit a Copy of Your Passport and Immigration Documents

You must submit a copy of the photo page of your passport and any other U.S. visas, permanent residence cards, or permanent residence application documents. These documents should be uploaded through the Student Portal.

Optional: Submit Additional Materials for Scholarship Consideration

Scholarships for international students are primarily based on past academic achievement as reflected in your test scores and transcripts. However, our admissions team will also consider additional documents such as a resume or CV, activities list, personal statement or essay, special awards or honors, or portfolios when making scholarship evaluations. These additional documents are completely optional both for admission and for scholarship consideration. If you would like to include these items in your application, please upload them with your application to ensure they are reviewed with your application and included in our scholarship considerations. Note: since visiting and exchange students are not eligible for merit-based scholarships, we encourage them not to submit any of these optional materials.

Note: At the time of admission, all accepted international undergraduate students will be required to pay a $100 non-refundable Undergraduate Enrollment Confirmation Deposit prior to the issuance of an I-20. The Undergraduate Enrollment Confirmation Deposit will be applied towards your tuition and fees upon enrollment. This payment is non-refundable regardless of any external circ*mstances such as failing to secure a visa appointment or failing to obtain a visa.

Graduate Admission Requirements

All graduate students, including international students, must complete the Graduate Application and any program-specific requirements. Find a complete list of general and program-specific requirements here. Additionally, international students must complete the following requirements to support their application and receive their immigration documents.
